A WARM, CLEAN PLACE FOR A WOMAN TO REST HER HEAD . . .
Our shelter offers overnight accommodations for up to ten women. The shelter functions in cooperation with the Gathering Place Drop-In Center and the Partnership for the Homeless. The Gathering Place staff screens guests, provides showers, clothing, and social services to help people break out of homelessness.
How You Can Help: Volunteers serve as overnight hosts and dinner hosts. Overnight hosts oversee the shelter from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 6:00 a.m. We give new volunteers a tour and orientation on the third Monday of each month. On your first nights as a shelter volunteer, we pair you with an experienced volunteer who will also spend the night and offer assistance and on the job training. Dinner hosts assist the overnight host by preparing and serving dinner and then cleaning up. This is a particularly good way for new volunteers to become acquainted with the shelter. It is also a great way for families or others who cannot make an overnight commitment to serve.
When We Need You: Overnight hosts are needed from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 6:00 a.m. Dinner hosts arrive at 6pm and stay till about 9pm. Ideally, volunteers commit to one night a month.
How To Get Started: To get involved, or call him at 212.378.0229 and plan to attend the Shelter Orientation. Orientations are held on the third Monday of each month at 6pm in the Vestry room. (Enter through 108 East 51st Street door.)
