Franz Peter Schubert –
Missa in G
Franz
Schubert (1797-1828) composed his Missa in G in 1815. It is scored for 4 part
choir, soprano, tenor and bass soloists, strings and continuo. An early mass,
it is highly influenced by Mozart in the natural symmetry of its phrases, but holds
glimpses of the harmonic adventurousness and emotional intensity of Schubert’s
later work.
Sunday, SEPTEMBER 13
Franz Joseph Haydn
Missa in D Minor (“The Lord Nelson”)
At 11 am, St. Bartholomew's Choir with orchestra will offer Haydn's Missa in D Minor ("The Lord Nelson Mass") as part of the Summer Festival of Sacred Music. Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed his Missa in D Minor in 1798. It is scored for 4 part choir, soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, strings, trumpets, tympani and continuo. It is the third of Haydn’s six late masses. According to legend, the powerful trumpet fanfares of the Benedictus of this mass were inspired by the news of Admiral Lord Nelson's victory over Napolean at the Battle of the Nile. Although, the mass makes use of vivid war imagery, Haydn's noble vision of peace in the final "Dona nobis pacem" is unsurpassed in any other of his mass settings.
