BIBLE STUDIES @ St. Bart’s
THE GOSPEL, THE NEW YORK TIMES, and YOU
Wednesdays at 12:45 pm
The Rev. Lynn Sanders
The Rev. Lynn C. Sanders leads a reflection on the upcoming Sunday readings + the day’s New York Times Op-Ed page. Thoughtful, respectful discussion. Laughter. Occasional irreverence. All are welcome.
The Gospel for September 12, 2010:
The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Luke 15: 1–10:
All the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus.
And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This
fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this
parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of
them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the
one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on
his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together
his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have
found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more
joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine
righteous persons who need no repentance. Or what woman having ten
silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the
house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it,
she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me,
for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there
is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who
repents.”

CONTEMPLATIVE BIBLE STUDY : Every other Friday at 12:45 pm
Our next meeting is Friday, September 10, 2010
Led by Christine Dorer
Continuing a study of the Gospel of Luke, one of the most brilliant writings in early Christianity. Theodore Robinson and N.T. Wright provide scholarly insights into this extraordinarily full account of the events of the life of Jesus. Luke, a cultured and educated man, writes from his perspective of having read and interviewed those who were actual witnesses to Jesus and his grace filled presence. Please join us!
WHAT ELSE? The Bible's reach is vast. One book that permeates so many others... check out WHAT’S UP THIS WEEK @ ST. BART’S to see if there's a Book Study Class you might like to be part of.
MILLARD COOK, Our Executive Assistant to the Rector provides some helpful hints here - 3 ONLINE SITES TO CHECK OUT:
For those Bible Study groups at St. Bart’s which are looking at the upcoming Sunday’s readings, there is a wonderful online resource which gives the complete set of readings offered in the Revised Common Lectionary. Please click on the link, choose the particular Sunday and then click on the “RCL” option. Each page will provide the “Collect” (the opening prayer which gives the “theme” for that particular Sunday) as well as the Psalm, the suggested reading from the Hebrew Scriptures (or “Old Testament”), the Epistle (or reading from the New Testament) and the Gospel. This is the link to the Lectionary page: http://www.io.com/~kellywp/
For those who are interested in seeing the Psalms and other prayers which are prayed in the Daily Offices (Morning Prayer, Noon Prayer, Evening Prayer and Compline) each day, there is another wonderful resource the "Mission of St. Clare" webpage. For those who are intimidated by all the page-turning in the Book of Common Prayer, this resource makes praying the daily Offices very simple (as easy as clicking with[ your mouse). Here is the link: http://www.missionstclare.com/english/index.html (do note that most people will probably prefer to use Rite II (which uses a more contemporary English vocabulary).
And finally, if you are ever curious to know which Saint will be observed on a particular day, you could consult the Lesser Feasts and Fasts calendar. Here is a link to that: http://ical.me.com/millardscook/Episcopal_Lesser.
