Lay Servers in Worship
Acolytes
Carry cross and candles in procession and serve as altar assistants during Communion.
Lectors and Intercessors
Read Lessons and Prayers of the People. An audition is required and offered by invitation of the clergy or verger. Lectors should have basic familiarity with the sacred scriptures as well as an understanding of how to use the Lectionary.
Daily Office Officiants
Officiants lead Morning and Evening Prayer on weekdays in the Chapel as part of the daily worship cycle. Officiants should have basic familiarity with the sacred scriptures as well as an understanding of how to use the Lectionary.
Altar Guild
Members of the Altar Guild prepare for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Sundays and every day of the week by cleaning, preparing, and setting out the patens, chalices, and linens. They also care for the altar linens, polish the silver and brass, and care for the sacristies of the church and chapel.
Vestment Care
Work on-site to help launder, iron, and repair a sizeable collection of cassocks and albs used for weekly worship.
Lay Eucharistic Ministers
The role of administering the chalice during Communion is offered by clergy invitation. The Church canon laws require diocesan licensing of lay eucharistic ministers, a process which involves formal training.
Training is a prerequisite to serving in any of the above capacities. For information on how to be considered for training, contact the Verger, Michael Collins, at 212-378-0204 or collins@stbarts.org.
