Since 2006, St. Bart's has participated in the Carpenter's Kids Program, which enables vulnerable children in Tanzania to attend school.

Check out the video above which is a 'first-hand view' of life within The Carpenter's Kids program produced by St. Bart's parishioner, Brian Burnett, during his pilgrimage to Tanzania in 2008.

The Carpenter’s Kids program was created in 2006 as a partnership between the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika in Tanzania and the Episcopal Diocese of New York. The Anglican Diocese is based in the city of Dodoma, in the central region of Tanzania, East Africa. It has about 550,000 members spread across 200 parishes.

carpenters-kids-1The purpose is to enable HIV/AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children to attend school.  The children are selected for the program after a careful screening by their parishes. Once they are selected they remain in the program until they enter secondary school. All children, regardless of their religion, are eligible to become a Carpenter’s Kid.  Currently there are 6,625 Carpenter’s Kids in 116 linked villages. St. Bart’s is linked to the village of Mvumi Makulu, one of the largest in the diocese.  Since 2006 we have supported one-hundred children in the program.

In Tanzania the schools are free, but you must have a uniform in order to attend.  The parents or guardians do not have the means to provide them to their children. Our annual support has enabled these children to attend school by providing them annually with a uniform, shoes, socks, school supplies, soap and a nourishing breakfast on school days.

The annual cost per child is $67.00. There are several ways you can make a donation:
1)
Click on the RED DONATE button at right.  Select Carpenter’s Kids from the drop down list.
2) Call St. Bart’s Central and make a donation with your credit card or send a check to the attention of Chris Turner in the Development Office. Please add “Carpenters Kids” to the notation on your check.

Each summer there are two pilgrimages to Tanzania limited to about 20 people. Since the program inception we have had ten parishioners visit Mvumi Makulu, our linked village. The cost of each trip is approximately $3,500.
