Pianist Bruce Levingston is one of today’s leading figures in contemporary music. Many of the country’s most important composers have written works for him and his Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center world premiere performances of their pieces have won notable critical acclaim. The New Yorker describes him as “elegant and engaging” while The New York Times calls his performances “graceful,” “sensuous” and “hauntingly serene.”
This season, Mr. Levingston performs a program in the magnificent St. Bartholomew’s Church. Inspired by this beautiful location, the selections of works to be performed have been chosen for their sacred, as well as surreal, influences from art, religion and music. The concert includes premieres of new works by acclaimed young composers Lisa Bielawa and Keeril Makan, as well as works of Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Pärt and Rachmaninoff. There will also be a screening of Red Bucket Films’
Buttons, Luis Buñuel’s haunting short film
Menjant Garotes (Eating Sea Urchins), 1930, and
Salvador Dalí Home Movie,
1954, with scores by Keeril Makan.
